WINES OF DISTINCTION

Chalk Hill, the winery for Wits End and Alpha Crucis, is a sixth generation winery whose first vines were planted in 1897, and they’re still going strong today with a diverse line of Italian and French varietals. The focus is to make small batch, hand-crafted wines of distinction.

The grapes are primarily sourced from six family-owned vineyards in the McLaren Vale district, 40 kilometres south of Adelaide in South Australia. McLaren Vale’s Mediterranean-type climate of cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers provides perfect growing conditions for premium grapes. Each vineyard has a different soil type and topography, providing unique growing environments for the grapes.

The Harvey family, who started out as grape growers many generations ago, are committed to make wines that reflect the unique place that is McLaren Vale.

Renae Hirsch joined the winery in November 2014 to oversee all aspects of winemaking. Her approach to winemaking is quite simple, she likes to make and drink wines that have a purity of fruit expression, showcasing varietal, regional and vineyard characteristics. She believes this is achieved using as little intervention as possible, aiming to guide the wines through maturation before bottling to maintain freshness while having balance, elegance and finesse.
