All About Valespino

A SHERRY FOR KINGS AND QUEENS

Bodegas Valdespino is one of the oldest bodegas in Jerez. Located in the southwest corner of Spain and world-renowned for its sherry production, the history, rugged soil and close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean give sherry the world-class characteristics it deserves. The history of this bodega dates back to the 13th century, when King Alfonso X rewarded the knight Alfonso Valdespino for his help in liberating Jerez from the Moors. Valdespino was given a parcel of vineyards and started making wine.

In 1430 commercial activity was said to have started and the company of today was founded in 1875. It quickly gained prestige and fame when it became a supplier to the Royal Houses of Spain and Sweden.

Bodega Valdespino still respects tradition and the importance of terroir. Valdespino is one of the few bodegas to own their own vineyards. Currently they own 186 hectares of vineyards and manages another 220 hectares, all of them planted with the Palomino grape.

At the end of the 1990s, the Valdespino family sold the company to Grupo Estévez, owned by José Estévez. José made his fortune from selling sand to make bottles and was a sherry aficionado. All of the Valdepino soleras, around 25,000 barrels, were moved from the old bodegas, which had fallen into serious disrepair, to new to new technologically-advanced facilities just outside of Jerez. The move took about two and a half years to complete.

Grupo Estévez now owns some of the finest sherry houses in and around Jerez.
