Made from Macabeo grapes–known as Viura in Rioja– that were picked from 20 year old vines on one of Castano’s organic certified vineyards. After maceration and fermentation, some of the wine was aged for 2 months in new French oak barrels. The Macabeo grapes were picked late in the harvest, giving the wine its extra floral notes and soft elegance. The resulting wine delivers intense freshness and lift. Delicious flavors of apple, pear, tropical fruit, citrus and floral notes with a touch of flinty minerality, followed by a surprisingly long finish.
For those unfamiliar with Macabeo, it is one of Spain’s most widely grown wine grape varietals. It is the backbone of most Cava sparkling wines from the Penedes region. Expressions vary from brisk and light bodied to more weighty like an oaked Chardonnay. In Castano’s mid-weight expression, the wine has a creamy texture supported with brisk minerality and citrus notes.
