All About Salentein

A Family Affair

For Bouchon, family is everything: past, present and future. A young Julio Bouchon Jr. joined the family project halfway through the 90s. His siblings Juan and María came on board ten years later. Their arrival coincided with a new phase for Bouchon: exportation. It was a time when a young, fresh point of view was just what was needed to strike a new balance between tradition and innovation.

The professions and experience of the three siblings complement each other perfectly. Nowadays each one has their own area of expertise, but they all share fond memories of a childhood spent at their father’s side at the annual pruning before the onset of winter, as well as helping him sample the grapes at harvest time.

In 2014, this latest Bouchon generation struck out on their own and re-launched “Las Mercedes”, creating wines that represent their own style under the freedom of a separate label.

Our vineyards are located on ancient granite soils, which bring minerality and depth to our Chilean wines.

Santa Rosa has 90 planted hectares. The plantation dates back to 1956. Vines are grown on vertical trellises and drip-watered.

Mingre Vineyard has 50 planted hectares. The plantings are oriented East-West and vertical trellises are used to capture as much sun as possible in the canopy. 52% of the vine parcels are drip-watered; the rest of the parcels are only watered by the rain (dry farming).

Batuco has 22 planted hectares.Vines are grown on vertical trellises and the only water they receive is from the rain (dry farming).

We are OLD VINES and without irrigation, since we make a sincere effort to rescue the patrimonial varieties from the southern Chile, a living treasure of our viniculture, such as País, Semillon, Carignan and Cinsault varieties. We are MAULE because the entire lifecycle of our wines takes place on our vineyards in the interior dry land of the Maule Valley. We are TERROIR, because we want our wines to highlight their origins. We believe that barrel-aging adds complexity, but do not consider it to be the most important factor. We are SUSTAINABLE, as we believe the vineyards must live together in harmony with the surrounding environment.
