Diemersfontein Wellington, South Africa
The heritage of the Diemersfontein Country Estate goes back decades and tells the story of family, farming and the arts. In the early 1940s Max Sonnenberg bout the 183 hectare farm, which lies in the shadow of the majestic Hawekwa Mountains with a panoramic view of both Du Toit's Kloof and Bains' Kloof. (Pictured) During the second world war, Italian prisoners of war were housed in the farm's cottages. The farm's association with the arts started with the strains of opera singing drifting up from the cottages housing the Italian prisoners. The first vines were planted on Diemersfontein in the 1970s by Max's son Richard. David Sonnenberg, the third generation owner, has taken the winery global, placing his beloved Chocolate Coffee Pinotage in markets from Asia to the UK to Ontario.
