                                        Pietro Beconcini San Miniato, Italy

                                        Picture
Husband and wife team, Leo's and Eva Beconcini continue the tradition of Leo's grandfather a sharecropping grape farmer on the lands of the Marchesi Ridolfi. Leo speaks of his grandfather as a pioneer; the one who broke free of the sharecropping system to control his destiny when he bought the estate. That same sense of passion and freedom finds its way into these wines Building on a winemaking tradition in San Miniato that goes back 2,000 years, the wines of Pietro Beconcini show an uncommon sense of place and style.

If you've never experienced the full potential of the Sangiovese grape this is the wine for you to try. After 18 months in oak, this 2006 Sangio leads with bright bing cherry notes and then caresses the pallete with velvetty tannins only to finish with crisp clean acidity you didn't expect. It will elevate your next meal to levels rarely attained.

Every table needs a chianti.  So goes the saying, but today, with consumer tastes tending to rounder, more fruit driven wines, much of what comes out of Tuscany is simply to tart to pass the taste test. Not so here. Named for the Ancient Road that runs between Cantebury and the Vatican (and right past the winery), this Tuscan blend brims with bright red fruit and licorice and of course, firm acidity on the finish.
